Anxiety, depression & mental health issues. Peer pressure magnified by social media. Navigating schooling during the pandemic. Teenagers today face unique challenges with heavy social-emotional implications. Yet despite this heightened need for SEL supports, some argue that our well-intentioned programs fall short of teen expectations, more likely to be read as "cringe" than meaningful to their psychological needs and motivations. On top of that, educators tend to shift away from SEL content as their students grow older, opting to focus on academics without much attention to their social-emotional learning and development. In this virtual event, we address these problems by applying an adolescent lens to SEL interventions.
Join us for an expert Q&A to learn from district leaders who specialize in SEL supports for middle and high school students. Together, we will:
- Identify common problems unique to middle and high school students, and the implications this has on their social-emotional learning
- Apply an adolescent lens to unpack SEL supports, such as approaches that incorporate an understanding of teen brain development and youth culture.
- Share best practices, both short-and long-term, that not only address academic and SEL needs for adolescents but also for teachers and school leaders
- Learn how to leverage SEL data to check in with students, build relations, and provide other social-emotional interventions and support
